It’s “Just eat less and move more” as the oh-so-simple solution to all your health and fitness goals.
But it doesn’t necessarily work the way many people think. In fact, it can hurt you more than help you if you take it to extremes.
See, some of us think this means that the secret to weight loss and fitness is: Starve yourself and live at the gym.
Not true!
It’s true that calorie management and movement are key components of a healthy lifestyle.
But your body needs fuel and balance to thrive! Constantly living in a caloric deficit while overworking your body is not helpful.
Here are three reasons why.
Food Is Fuel. You need to eat enough food – especially the right foods – to nourish your body. If you cut back too much for too long, you can freak out your metabolism and make it want to hold onto weight you’re trying to lose. A proper diet, including enough calories, will keep your body running efficiently and power you through your day (including your workouts).
Don’t Overwork Your Body. Here again, pushing too hard might seem like a smart way to get faster results. But over-exercising can lead to burnouts, injuries, and exhaustion. Plus – your muscles need recovery, along with fuel, to grow and repair; otherwise, it’s like you’re running on empty. Exercise should make you feel good and energized, not run down and bummed out.
Find the Balance. Too much of the “eat less/move more” mantra can mess with your hormones, too. When you don’t get enough food or rest, the body can produce cortisol, the stress hormone, that contributes to weight gain, irregular cycles, and feeling tired all the time. The right balance is part of a healthy relationship with both food and fitness.
I want you to feel amazing — inside and out. That means nourishing your body with wholesome foods that give you energy, moving in ways that make you feel strong and confident, and taking rest days when you need them.
Total drastic intensity is not the answer.
Sorry if this sounds boring, but… lasting progress comes from consistency and being kind to yourself.
I’m here to help you find that balance and live your best life.
