Life can get so busy with work, family, and everything in between that it seems nearly impossible to make health a priority. It’s a question I ask my clients often: What’s your biggest challenge with staying consistent in your health goals? And let me tell you, the answers are often ones that many of us can relate to.
So today, I want to share some of the common challenges I hear, along with a few real solutions that have helped me and my clients along the way.
One of the most common challenges is simply that life gets in the way. We all know how quickly things can pile up—work commitments, family responsibilities, social events, and more. At times, it feels like health goals get pushed to the back burner.
I’ve definitely been there myself. Juggling multiple priorities used to leave me with little room to focus on my own health. But over time, I learned how important it is to set boundaries and create routines that are flexible. The key is finding ways to make health a non-negotiable, even when life gets busy. Small, consistent steps help keep things moving forward, even on the busiest days.
Another common struggle I hear about is low energy or motivation. After a long, exhausting day, the last thing you might want to do is meal prep or hit the gym. I get it—it’s tough to summon the energy for a workout or plan healthy meals when all you want is a break.
This used to be a huge barrier for me too. But what I’ve discovered is that micro-goals are a game-changer. Instead of setting myself up for a whole hour at the gym, I’d commit to just 10 minutes of movement, or I’d start by preparing a few healthy ingredients for the week. Little actions like that can spark more energy, and eventually, they lead to bigger wins.
Many of my clients also struggle with perfectionism or self-doubt. It’s easy to fall into the trap of waiting for the “perfect” time to start, or expecting that every health choice needs to be flawless.
But here’s the truth: consistency isn’t about perfection—it’s about making progress. I’ve had my fair share of days when I missed a workout or didn’t follow my meal plan to the letter, but I learned that missing one day doesn’t mean failure. It’s all about getting back on track and focusing on the long-term journey, not a single moment of imperfection.
Finally, a lot of people struggle with lack of clear goals or plans. When we don’t have a clear direction, it can feel overwhelming to even get started. I’ve been there, and it’s incredibly easy to get lost in the overwhelm.
What I’ve found works best is to break down larger goals into small, manageable steps. For instance, rather than focusing on the end goal of “getting healthy,” I break it down into specific actions, like tracking meals or setting movement goals. When I have clarity on what I need to do, it’s much easier to stay consistent and motivated.
Staying consistent with your health goals is tough. Some days will be easier than others, and that’s okay. Health isn’t about being perfect; it’s about finding ways to make small changes that add up over time.
If you’re feeling stuck with your own health goals, I encourage you to reflect on your own challenges and ask yourself: What’s your biggest hurdle? It’s not about getting it all right, but about taking one step at a time. I’d love to hear what’s been holding you back.
