And not just ONE environment, but TWO, since most people divide their time between the home and the workplace.
Here are some tips to establishing the right environment to empower your efforts.
AT HOME
First, let’s create a home sanctuary that’s just for your wellness. It can be as simple or as elaborate as you like, from a corner of the bedroom to the entire basement. The point is that you have a dedicated space that’s just for you to exercise and meditate without any hassle.
Keep basic equipment nearby and easily accessible, like a yoga mat and dumbbells or resistance bands. Do whatever you need to make the space pleasant. Eliminate anything that might give you an excuse to not use it.
Second, buy only the groceries that support your dietary choices. For example, if you’ve decided to avoid ultra-processed junk foods, then don’t keep any in the house. Stock the cupboards, refrigerator, and freezer with foods that support your goals, including healthy snacks like fresh fruit and nuts.
Third, set up your meal-prep location with the right equipment you need, from pots and pans to measuring tools and storage containers.
These three steps will take you a long way toward establishing solid routines.
And if you live with other people, let them know what you’re up to and how they can help.
AT WORK
Before we even get to the workplace, consider HOW you get there. If you drive, then keep your car free of clutter, which will discourage your from using drive-through windows. If you can walk or take public transit, then do it at least once a week.
Eat a reasonable breakfast at home and pack a healthy lunch.
At work, first keep healthy snacks handy so you can avoid vending machines and “convenient” food courts.
Second, have a water bottle nearby and use it throughout the day.
Third, don’t just sit there. Take the stairs when you can. Set a reminder on your watch to walk once an hour. Ask colleagues to take meetings while walking instead of sitting. Use your lunch break to get in purposeful movement or meditation.
Remember that it’s helpful to have an accountability buddy at work, so enlist someone for companionship at least part of the time.
Your environments are crucial to your success, so take time to get them lined up as support systems, and don’t be shy about seeking support.
You really can be your best at home and at work. And you deserve it. Let’s go!
